What is the Dyestat.com Report saying about STATE

In 5A Girls, Freshman Danielle Menlove of Jordan burns the field with a blazing 17:42, 52 seconds ahead of 5A runner-up Meghan Hedquist of Davis. Hedquist leads the Darts, ranked #4 in the SW, to a dominant victory with all five scoring runners placing in the top 20. Menlove's teammates at Jordan run themselves into a second place finish with 85 points, 42 points behind Davis.

In 5A Boys, SW #6 Alta cruises to an easy State Title, having all scoring runners in the top 12. Seth Gutzwiller of Davis is Utah's 5A individual State Champion, running a 15:36, 8 seconds ahead of Hillcrest's star, Jason Lynch. Garett Jones, Ryan Bradshaw of American Fork, and Kyle Moffet round out the top five, with Jones and Moffet leading Alta to its impressive performance.

SW #5 Timpview headlines the 4A Boys race with a convincing 65 point victory over Mountain View. Led by the 4A individual State Champion, Jonathan Nelson (15:17), Timpview places five in the top 21, producing a 1:20 spread, a 26 second spread from runners 2-5. Runners-up Mountain View posted a 22 second spread for all scoring runners, but the lack of a front runner was the difference, as four Timpview runners finished in front of Mountain View's top runner.

Macinzie O'Very leads SW #9 Mountain Crest in a tight battle for the 4A Girls Title. Mountain Crest and Mountain View both finished with all scoring runners in the top 20, but Mountain Crest benefitted from their talent up front in O'Very and Laura Hatch (1st and 4th overall), to edge Mountain View, 44-56, for the State Trophy. O'Very claims the individual State Title with an 18:13.9, 12 seconds ahead of Emma Saarel of West.

In the combined results, SW #6 Alta proves its dominance in Utah this season, with a 62 point victory over SW #5 Timpview. SW#4 American Fork finished third, 21 points behind Timpview. Jonathan Nelson runs the fastest time of the day with a 15:17, 18 seconds ahead of Jacob Barton of Ogden. On the girls side, no one stands a chance against Danielle Menlove's historic performance. Menlove is the only girl all day to run under 18:00, and she finished 24 seconds ahead of the next runner (17:42-18:06). SW #4 Davis, led for the second race all season by senior star Candace Eddy, staves off any upset by SW #9 Mountain Crest and SW #5 Park City by placing five runners in the top 51, defeating the two teams by 11.5 and 19 points, respectively.

D-news PRE State

The moment that Utah's elite prep cross country runners have been waiting for is almost here.
On Wednesday, the state's top runners and teams will square off against one another in the prep cross country state championships at Sugarhouse Park. The first race — 1A girls — will be at 11:30 a.m., with races to follow throughout the day, culminating with the 5A boys race at 4 p.m.

Heading into those all-important showdowns, here's a breakdown of what to expect from each classification:

CLASS 5A: Alta hopes to win its first boys cross country title in school history but will face stiff competition from American Fork and defending 5A champ Davis.

After powering to a dominating win at the Murray Invite a month ago, the Hawks, who have very good depth, looked to be untouchable in Class 5A. However, American Fork has since demonstrated it could have the horses to beat Alta, evidenced by the fact that the Cavemen recently defeated 4A defending champ Timpview at the Nebo Invitational. And then there's Davis, which has steadily improved this season and is led by individual favorite Seth Gutzwiller.

On the girls side, Davis is expected to roll. The Darts got star Candace Eddy back from injury, and they have the best set of five runners in the state — boys or girls.

Individually, one of the best races of the day should be in 5A between Skyline's Shalaya Kipp, last year's runner-up, and Jordan's Danielle Menlove, the freshman phenom.

DES NEWS ARTICLE AFTER OREM KIWANIS (BOYS)

OREM — Hundreds of runners from across the state plodded through a sloppy, rain-soaked course Saturday morning at the Orem Kiwanis Invitational. The Davis girls and Alta boys seemed unaffected by the less-than-ideal conditions, taking the team titles and proving why they're still the teams to beat this fall.
"They love this weather; they want it like this," Davis coach Corbin Talley said. "I think they cheered when they heard the forecast yesterday."

Meghan Hedquist led the way for the Darts, covering the five-kilometer course in 19:12 to finish fifth overall. Katie Swanson (19:41) Julianne Wirthlin (20:08) and Candace Eddy (20:20) rounded out Davis' top five.

"Megan was just outstanding today," Talley said. "She was patient, moved up the whole race and finished really well over that last mile."

The Darts finished just ahead of 3A powerhouse Park City. The Miners dominated the 1A-3A classification with 29 points, but came up four points short of Davis in the overall scoring, 74-78.

The Alta boys dominated all classifications, putting three in the top 10 and all five scorers in the top 20. Kyle Moffet (16:38), Garret Jones (16:43), Jack Webster (16:44), Parker Syndergaard (16:59) and Brian Howell (17:11) crossed the line within 33 seconds of one another, combining for an impressive 58-point first-place finish. Davis was second in the overall scoring with 143.

"We have four seniors this year that have a lot of experience," Alta coach Rob Murphy said. "We may not have anyone that will win state individually, but we have five to six really solid runners that should be very competitive."
The Hawks have never won a state cross country championship, but with big wins at the Murray and Kiwanis invites, Alta is the consensus favorite to win 5A. Murphy is cautiously optimistic.

"I know Corbin will have his guys ready to go, and American Fork can be scary," Murphy said. "We know Davis is used to winning and until we've won a bunch of state titles like they have, we'll consider them to be very close, no matter what happens earlier in the season."

Individually, Jordan's Danielle Menlove and Davis star Seth Gutzwiller paced both fields. Menlove broke away from former state champion Shalaya Kipp after two miles, gapping the Skyline star by 24 seconds over the last two kilometers. Despite the poor course conditions, Menlove ran a blistering 18:35 for 5,000 meters.

"I ran a week ago in worse conditions, so today didn't seem that bad," Menlove said. "I just tried to stay right behind Shalaya and tried to make a move after two miles."

Gutzwiller broke the tape for his first win at a major invitational. Similar to Menlove's race, the Darts' top runner surged to the front after two miles and held off Rock Spring junior Garret Zans with a sub-5:10 last mile.

"It's pretty exciting," Gutzwiller said smiling, still drenched after the big win. "I'm just happy to get a win and finish ahead of some guys that beat me at Murray."

Most cross country teams now have a week to prepare for region meets before converging on Sugarhouse Park on Oct. 22 for the state championships.
